Filipino poets in World War II

Angela Manalang-Gloria’s To the Man I Married (June 29, 1936), part I:

I
You are my earth and all the earth implies:
The gravity that ballasts me in space,
The air I breathe, the land that stills my cries
For food and shelter against devouring days.
You are the earth whose orbit marks my way
And sets my north and south, my east and west,
You are the final, elemented clay
The driven heart must turn to for its rest.

If in your arms that hold me now so near
I lift my keening thoughts to Helicon
As trees long rooted to the earth uprear
Their quickening leaves and flowers to the sun,
You who are earth, O never doubt that I
Need you no less because I need the sky!

Been reading Prof. Gemino H. Abad‘s “Getting Real: An Introduction to the Practice of Poetry.” Read about Filipino poets in English, first half of 20th century. Among them, Angela Manalang-Gloria (1907-1995) and her poems. Had a sense of foreboding, learning that some of the poems were written less than a decade prior, or a few years before, World War II. When Manila was razed to the ground and more than a hundred thousand perished.

How did our poets fare, dealt with, the cruelty of World War II? As of now, I found out about one, of our mentioned poet here, Angela Manalang-Gloria. From Wikipedia:

On March 11, 1945, her husband Celedonio and her son Ruben were attacked by a Japanese patrol in Alitagtag, Batangas. Though her husband died, Ruben was able to survive, yet his trauma had been so severe that he could not bring himself to recount the attack. This event left Manalang-Gloria a young widow with three children to support, which forced her to abandon writing and enter the abaca business, which she successfully managed.

Second part of her poem:

II
I can not love you with a love
That outcompares the boundless sea,
For that were false, as no such love
And no such ocean can ever be.

But I can love you with a love
As finite as the wave that dies
And dying holds from crest to crest
The blue of everlasting skies.

To the man she married, and perished in World War II.

Note: This is a work in progress. Contributions on the state, and samples of poetry, of our Filipino poets during WW2 welcome, on comments section. Or e-mail me at karlosilverio.sevilla96@gmail.com. Thanks.

The Gods Envy Us

“The gods envy us. They envy us because we’re mortal, because any moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we’re doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again.”

And begins this blog of my documentary prose poems. First of this type is She doesn’t want her daughter to think she’s that kind of woman, published on Pacifiqa. (Though, I regret writing “come back there” instead of “get back there”; my mom chided me for the grammatical error. :p)

I.

She was a minor when the raid happened. Videotaped dancing naked onstage. On national TV news with her soon-to-be-lady parts pixelated along with her face. The raid, led by an international-something agency, was conducted to rescue them and arrest the perpetrators of a major offense…
